Programme Overview
Strategic Stewardship is becoming increasingly relevant as today’s business leaders face many dilemmas, increasingly so in the 21st century as sustainability and “ESG” issues have become more salient. This program prepares strategy leaders to effectively tackle the challenges of the 21st century. It helps them understand the needs of their different stakeholders, and enables them to craft strategies that can transform their organizations into stewards of their industry.

Programme Objective
What should be the right price for insulin? Are gig workers employees? How to regulate speech online if at all? How much pollution is okay? As leaders face these types of questions, this course teaches strategic stewardship, a form of strategic decision-making aimed at enhancing shareholder value while pursuing “good” and innovative market-friendly strategies that provide shared benefits for the stakeholders.

Strategic stewards are proactive and integrated in their approach and think through the inter-related actions and reactions, as their decisions affect society, the markets in which they operate, and ultimately their business.

Programme Content
As strategic stewardship is a proactive form of integrated strategy, participants learn design methodology in this course, for more socially aware and empathetic strategic decision-making, by putting the human experience at the centre, developing empathy for various stakeholders, and gaining insight into their said and unsaid needs.
The course is divided into five modules:

  • The Design methodology (Session 1 and 2)
  • What is good for the firms (Session 3 and 4)
  • What is good for the market (Sessions 5 and 6)
  • What is good for stakeholders and society (Sessions 7 and 8)
  • Strategy for the commons (Sessions 9 and 10)

Key Benefits/Takeaways
The course is designed with the following specific objectives and learning outcomes:

  • Learning the concept of strategic stewardship, ESG, and new approaches to strategic thinking.
  • Learning the concepts of pro-business, pro-market, and pro-society.
  • Learning design-thinking methodology.
  • Developing awareness of the various visible and invisible stakeholders of a business and their needs.
  • Crafting strategies that create long-term and sustainable value for the firm, while also contributing to the greater commons.

    Pedagogy

The primary mode of study in the course is the case method. The course is highly immersive and motivates the executives to seek their own sources of information during the two sessions per case. In the initial session participants understand the views of various stakeholders, using a variety of techniques inspired by the design methodology. In the follow-up session participants take the boardroom view and craft an implementable strategy such that the firms can act as strategic stewards.

    Who Should Participate
Senior and emerging leaders of any organization with “ESG” concerns.
