Programme Overview

In an era of volatile markets, technological disruption, and intense stakeholder scrutiny, even the most iconic corporations are vulnerable to sudden decline or collapse. The failures of giants like Theranos, SVB, FTX, and the challenges faced by the Boeing 737 MAX series serve as a stark reminder of a critical leadership imperative: the ability to learn from past mistakes to prevent future catastrophes.

The average tenure of S&P 500 firms has plummeted from over 30 years in the late 1970s to under 20 years today, reflecting a landscape of rapid disruption and unforgiving markets. This volatility brings immense costs—from financial write-offs and reputational damage to the personal trauma of layoffs and lost credibility for senior leaders.

While most executive development programs fixate on success stories, this programme focuses on the crucial, yet often-ignored, question of why good companies fail. We believe that mastering the discipline of learning from failure is a core leadership competence. It provides invaluable lessons in strategy, culture, and decision-making that success stories simply cannot.

By examining the anatomy of corporate decline, you will learn to:

  • Detect Strategic Drift Early: Recognize the patterns of decline, such as over-commitment to outdated models, ignored warning signals, and governance blind spots, to intervene before challenges become existential.
  • Cultivate a Fail-Safe Learning Culture: Build an environment of psychological safety where setbacks are openly analyzed, fostering the resilience and innovation necessary for long-term success.
  • Strengthen Risk-Intelligent Decision Processes: Conduct systematic post-mortems to expose cognitive biases, hidden interdependencies, and control failures, sharpening future judgment and minimizing risk.
  • Drive Credible Change: Articulate lessons from past missteps to build stakeholder trust and significantly increase the odds of successful organizational transformation.

This three-day immersive programme provides senior leaders and policy professionals with practical frameworks for identifying early warning signs, navigating crises, and creating long-term value through strategic turnarounds. Hosted on IIMB’s verdant campus, the programme leverages the institute’s deep expertise in strategy and governance, preparing participants to convert setbacks into a strategic advantage.
