Programme Overview
Errors using inadequate data are much less than those using no data at all.” – said Charles Babbage.  He was right then, and he is right even more now. It is now widely recognized that data analytics plays a crucial role in corporate decision-making. Considering the volume of data generated every second, it has become almost a necessity for businesses to make data-driven decisions. Nevertheless, care must be taken. As Mark Twain cautions: “Data is like garbage. You’d better know what you are going to do with it before you collect it.” So, what tells one what to do? Answer: functional domain concepts. Any insightful data analytical model must consider and combine underlying domain concepts while formulating and executing the analysis. Surprisingly, in practice, analysts often overlook domain concepts when constructing their models. This program aims to fill this gap. Aided by different functional domain knowledge’s, it introduces participants to a number of data analytics techniques that yield actionable business insights.

Programme Contents
The program combines domain concepts with data analysis tools to produce actionable business decisions. Participants will gain hands-on experience analyzing data from various industries and/or countries.

  • Data and concepts work best together: Data is knowledge, but data only can be misleading sometimes.
  • Guest speaker: Business analytics in the industry, its opportunities and challenges.
  • Machines that make numbers speak: Probability and statistics.
  • The beauty of theory: Domain concepts (e.g., strategic choices, digital marketing, and financial management).
  • Decisions and their effects: Establishing qualitative and quantitative relationships between variables using linear regression analysis (basics), functional forms, categorical variables.
  • Modelling binary choices: The logit model.
  • Tracking same units over multiple time periods: Analysis of panel/longitudinal data.
  • Judging the future: Forecasting.
  • Performance is key: Benchmarking and performance/efficiency analysis with the stochastic frontier method.
  • Dealing with incomplete data: Analysis of censored/truncated data, selection model.

Programme Objective
This program aims to train participants to construct domain concepts driven models of data analyses. During this time, participants will learn data analytics tools useful for making effective business strategies, such as demand modelling, pricing, cause-and-effect analysis, benchmarking and strategic excellence analysis, and economic forecasting. To accomplish this, the program will adopt a hands-on, step-by-step instructional approach to several techniques, including probability, statistical testing, regression analysis, mixed effect modelling, stochastic frontier analysis, analysis of incomplete data, and analysis of longitudinal data. Anyone with basic mathematical and/or statistical skills and interested in data analytics may find this program useful. Coding experience is beneficial, but not required.

Key benefits/takeaways
