The Strategic Management of Innovation course looks at the dynamics of innovation, systematic processes for successful innovation, strategic aspects of innovation, and how to build and sustain innovation-related capabilities.
Programme Overview
Indian firms lag behind their peers in innovation-related capabilities. As India seeks to grow rapidly over the next several years, Indian firms need to ramp up their level of innovation. In this program, we examine how to build and sustain innovation-related capabilities.
Programme Objective
Increasingly, innovation has become one of the critical drivers of competitive advantage. Firms that innovate have high profitability, high growth rates and higher chances of survival. Despite the well-known benefits of innovation, firms find it difficult to be truly innovative. In this program, we examine the dynamics of innovation, systematic processes for successful innovation, strategic aspects of innovation, and how to build and sustain innovation-related capabilities. In addition, we will dwell on the institutional antecedents of innovation and its intertwining with competition.

Programme Director
Prof. Sai Yayavaram is a Professor in the Strategy Area at IIM Bangalore. Prior to joining IIM Bangalore, he was with the National University of Singapore for 9 years. He received his PhD in Strategic Management from The University of Texas at Austin, PGDM from IIM Ahmedabad and B.Tech from IIT Madras. He worked as a Consultant in Tata Strategic Management Group, Bombay from 1994-98.
Prof. Yayavaram currently teaches an elective course on corporate strategy to MBA students at IIM Bangalore. As part of Executive Education, he has conducted programmes in strategic management and innovation for several organizations. His research focuses on technology management, complexity and strategic rents and has been published in top-tier international journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science. He was a finalist at the 2002 INFORMS/Organization Science Dissertation Proposal Competition and was awarded the University of Texas Preemptive Fellowship in 1998. He is currently a Member of the Editorial Review Boards of Strategic Management Journal and Global Strategy Journal. He is also a Editor of Management and Organization Review.
